LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO BE OTHER PEOPLE.

You’re a strong, confident person with a pretty impressive career.

You have a cool sense of humour and you have a talent for making charming compliments at just the right moment.

You are intelligent and you know lots of things. Fantastic. You sound like you would be really fun to talk to!

…but are you the same person when you speak English?

Or do you turn into this awkward, boring person who is overthinking everything and is still checking over the last thing you said even after the conversation already moved on, like, five minutes ago? Thinking of a joke but then asking yourself if it’s appropriate and – ugh, the moment is gone?

Feeling like a robot with pre-programmed standard phrases but no originality? And do people tell you “Oh, but your English is great!” but you think they’re full of shit?

I’ve worked with so many people who felt the way you feel and I know:

THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE LEVEL OF YOUR ENGLISH. THE PROBLEM IS HOW YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SPEAK IT.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF:

  • You are tired of feeling nervous and stressed before meetings and presentations in English.

  • You avoid interesting conversations with interesting people for fear of being judged.

  • You’re frustrated because you feel like you can’t express your thoughts clearly.

  • But most of all, you are annoyed that you cannot be yourself. That your charm, your sense of humour, your ideas, your personality – all that great stuff that makes you you – doesn’t translate and you do not feel like you are coming across right.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE YOURSELF WHEN YOU SPEAK ENGLISH.

My background is as a traditional Business English trainer and for the first few years, I did what everyone else did: improve people’s grammar, teach them fancier vocabulary, talk about how to do business internationally without offending anyone (especially how to avoid embarrassing misunderstandings with British people as if that were the biggest priority in all our lives). I was delivering precise, personalised training, the best methods, the most state-of-the-art materials.

The problem? It didn’t work.

My students should have seen great results and made amazing progress. But that is not what happened. They improved, yes. But they still felt like crap.

After an amazing presentation in English, they couldn’t forget the one stupid mistake they made. They delivered a precise and clear argument that we had prepared together and they were still convinced everyone thought they sounded stupid.

The problem with traditional training methods is that they make you afraid of making mistakes and make you think that there is one right way to say something.

If this sounds familiar, then you have also tried improving your English “the traditional way”:

  • You had to learn grammar rules and then practice them with idiotic sentences that had nothing to do with you or your interests.

  • You had to learn lists of “useful vocabulary” that you understand when you hear it but can never remember when you need to use it.

  • You had to learn from native speakers and were taught to imitate them as much as possible so that you “sound natural”.

If these things have worked for you, congratulations. (Why are you here?)

But if you are here because you want to try something different, because that stuff hasn’t worked for you and if you are tired of feeling like English is holding you back, keep reading.

IF YOU’RE NOT BEING YOURSELF WHEN YOU SPEAK ENGLISH, IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW GOOD YOUR GRAMMAR IS.

YOU WILL ALWAYS FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.

When I saw that traditional methods weren’t getting my clients to where they wanted to be, I began to experiment.

I ditched the Business English course books that were boring me to death anyway and created my own materials instead. I stopped playing the awkward little ‘games’ I learned in my teacher training and turned to my performance theatre skill-set instead.

Also, I let go of the idea that I myself had to be and look “professional” all of the time and dress like everyday was a job interview. I allowed myself to show who I am instead. And –boom!– there was the natural confidence and all the fun I’d been missing.

My focus shifted from getting my learners to “speak perfect English” (impossible) to expressing themselves (completely possible and 100% recommended).

Sarah Plochl

Having “perfect English” or sounding like a native speaker is not possible for most of us.

The only “perfect” you can be is you.

Here is what I can offer you:

You can build a larger variety of vocabulary and expressions so that you can deliver your thoughts more precisely.

You can speak in a way that people want to listen to and feel inspired because you are using your own voice more powerfully.

You can master tools to understand and absorb language in a way that is suited to you and your brain and that you enjoy.

You can show up as yourself and feel comfortable enough to make jokes, to make compliments, to make a difficult point, to make a difference.

You can get to a point where you can do anything you want in English.

I’m looking forward to hearing your voice.

Let’s see how we can take the work of art that you already are and translate you into English.
